The building where JC Penney made its home traditionally in Sidney will not be empty for much longer.

Roger Byer, owner of the building, said he is in negotiations with Anytime Fitness to lease the property. The lease agreement was mailed on Friday.

Byer noted that it’s important for downtown buildings not to sit empty. He believes other nearby businesses such as restaurants and automobile dealerships will benefit having Anytime Fitness open.

“I hope it works really well,” Byer said.

He explains the lease ended for JC Penney at the building on March 17, 2018. Near the end of March, Byer received a call from Dan Schmaltz about the property. Schmaltz owns Anytime Fitness franchises in Williston, Billings and Bismarck.

Byer explained that the 24-hour gym is moving toward more rural area’s markets.

“They just believe Sidney will be a good location for one of their stores,” Byer said.

Plans are for Anytime Fitness to open in Sidney about Nov. 1. The start of a new year is usually a busy time for the gym. “Because people want to start losing weight and exercise more,” Byer said.

Construction work will include the addition of restrooms and changing rooms.

“It’s a great deal,” Byer said. “In order to get them here, we negotiated a reasonable lease agreement for the first few years until they get their feet under them.”

On a different note, Byer is pleased to announce the expansion of B&B Rental Sales and Service. He explained B&B started to rent equipment after Sidney Rental recently decided to close its doors.

“There’s a need for a rental shop in our area,” Byer said. “Sidney Rental has served the area for years and did an outstanding job.”

B&B has several hundred pieces of new and used equipment for all commercial,  residential and oilfield needs.

Byer explains the business offers everything that Sidney Rental did except for bulldozers and heavy highway construction equipment.

B&B just broke ground on a new rental service shop and will have a showroom for golf items including carts. When completed, the business will have 28,000 square feet for your rental, sales and service needs. “I believe our area will give us the business it takes to be a viable entity in the community,” Byer said.
