The National American Mathematics Competition was held at Sidney High School in February, and the results are in.

Of the 32 freshmen and sophomores who were tested locally, Dorian Obergfell had the high score, followed by Brooke Morrill and Sean Earle. Of the 36 Juniors and Seniors, senior Kaitlyn Keithley had top score followed by Juniors Chirstine Turek and Nic Trevino.

High school math teacher Yvonne Gebhardt said, “This competiton is probably the most challenging mathematics competition our students will see. All who participated are to be congratulated for their efforts.”

The Montana Council of Mathematics held Regional competitions in March. Now that all regions have completed their testing, results can be released to the public. For the Sidney area, Sidney high school students earning first places were freshmen Jenna Anderson for Dimensions & Shapes as well as Applied Mathematics, sophomore Brianna Brost for Intermediate Mathematics, seniors Caleb Slade and Michelle Stagl for Senior Mathematics, Caleb Slade for Scholarship level test, and senior Lilli Seitz for Advanced Mathematics.

Caleb Slade, Brianna Brost and Jenna Anderson earned Top Student awards for placing in the top 15 percent on all three of their individual events. The 11/12 team of Wyatt Heringer, Caleb Slade, juniors Cooper McGlothlin and NIc Trevino earned first place among all 11/12 teams.

Caleb Slade and Michelle Stagl will each be awarded a $200 scholarship from MCTM for placing first overall among the senior competitors. “Sidney High School congratulates these individuals as well as all others who spent the evening competing among the 320 students attending the meet,” Gebhardt said.

The Regional Academic Olympics was held on Wednesday, March 27th in Glasgow. Sidney competed against the larger regional schools including Glendive, Glasgow, Wolf Point, Plentywood, Malta, and Poplar.

Team One for Sidney included Wyatt Heringer, Caleb Slade, Nic Trevino, Brianna Brost and Jenna Anderson. Team Two included Michelle Stagl, Liza Reynolds, Christine Turek, Ecriselia Flores and Trudi Speldrich.

Bringing home top 10 places on the Social Studies test were Caleb Slade in First, Wyatt Heringer second, and Nic Trevino fourth place. On the English test, Caleb Slade placed fifth and Nic Trevino and Michelle Stagl tied for ninth place.

For the Science test, Wyatt Heringer placed fourth and Caleb Slade placed fifth. The Mathematics test earned five of the top 10 places for Sidney: Michelle Stagl brought home First place, Caleb Slade third, Nic Trevino seventh, and Wyatt Heringer and Liza Reynolds tied for eighth place.

“Each student represented Sidney High School proudly and we applaud their efforts,” Gebhardt said.
