Students at Central Elementary School were overjoyed when they were greeted with a new playground this school year.
“We had students excited here trying it out with their parents,” Central Elementary School Principal Sara Romo said about the reaction prior to the start of school. “It seems to be a great addition to not only the school but the community as well.”
Romo explained the process began when Eagle Foundation president Nicole Simonsen approached her about the possibility last spring.
“I jumped at the idea, and the pieces fell into place after that,” Romo said.
After the Eagle Foundation contacted Grondahl Recreation Inc., of Williston, foundation officials were informed that the Burke Play Structure was offering a matching funds grant of up to 50 percent of the structure cost.
An anonymous donor and the Eagle Foundation provided enough money in order to qualify for the matching funds.
“The district is fortunate to have the Eagle Foundation as the sponsor for this much needed project,” Sidney Superintendent of Schools Monte Silk said. “The community donors who give to the Eagle Foundation are the true benefactors and have our utmost appreciation.”
The school district then provided some of the funds to put rubber matting on the playground’s surface.
“Absolutely, this is a lot safer,” Romo said.
